Encrypted PDFs are awkward. Almost no other tool can read them, so merging, compressing, or converting a protected document fails before it starts — and re-typing the password every single time you open a file you own gets old quickly. This free tool to remove password from pdf files strips the encryption from a document you can already open.

The important boundary: you need to know the password. This decrypts, it does not crack. If the password is lost, no legitimate tool will recover it. What it does handle without any password is the other common case — PDFs that open freely but refuse to let you print, copy, or annotate. Those carry an owner password only, and leaving the field blank removes the restrictions.

Where this differs from the well-known alternatives is that nothing is uploaded. Every popular unlock service sends both your protected document and its password to their server. That is a strange thing to do with a file important enough to have been encrypted in the first place. Here qpdf runs as WebAssembly in the page, so the file and the password stay on your device.

Standard schemes are supported, including RC4 and AES-128/256, and only the encryption is removed — pages, text, images, and formatting come through untouched. Once unlocked, the document works with the rest of the suite: merge it, compress it, reorder its pages, or add a password back with the Protect PDF tool.
