Add Page Numbers to PDF

Printed reports, dissertations, contracts, and court bundles all need page numbers, and the PDF you have almost never has them. Our free tool to add page numbers to pdf documents does it in a few clicks, with the options that actually come up in real documents.

Choose any of six positions and five formats — a plain number, 'Page 7', '7 of 12', 'Page 7 of 12', or '- 7 -'. Skip the first page when there is a title page, which is the usual convention, and set a custom starting number when the document is one part of a larger bound work that has to continue the sequence. Font size and margin are adjustable so the numbering matches the document's own typography rather than fighting it.

One detail worth knowing, because many tools get it wrong: pages carrying a rotation flag. PDF editors draw in the page's unrotated coordinate system, so a number placed at 'bottom centre' on a sideways scan can land against a side edge, rotated ninety degrees. This tool converts the position through the page's rotation, so the number appears where you asked and reads upright regardless.

Numbers are drawn as new text on top of the existing content, which is left completely untouched and stays selectable and searchable. Everything runs locally in your browser.
